Ruth Ferris loved the Mississippi and passed that love on to several generations of her fifth grade kids.

When I finished the Route 66 project and cast about for a new project, I remembered Miss Ferris.

Fresh water flows through Bayou Teche, allowing cypress to grow as well a wetland plants.

Suzanne Simard, in Finding the Mother Tree, would call this huge live oak, the mother tree. It protects the smaller trees in case of a storm alogn Bayou Sale.

She would also say that trees grow best when they grow in clusters, their roots connected underground, passing information back and forth between trees on Bayou Crab.

Finally, she would note that trees grow best in clusters of different species like those on the island on Lac des Allemands.
