Floyd Redman gave the Blue Swallow Motel to his fiancee, Lilian, in 1958. Lilian added the sign in 1960 as competition for customers became intense.

"Gas is a penny business; it will always be a penny business." The Hedges Oil Company built a gas station in 1935. As Santa Rosa grew, 63 gas stations blossomed in town. If Hedges could undercut the customer by 5 cents, so be it.

In 1946 David Betten arranged El Jardin Lodge and Cafe into two courtyards with the cafe and office in between. He choose a prime site for his lodge, aross from State Fairgrounds.

Paddy Martinez discovered uranium near Grants in 1950 and the city boomed. Eugene Woo pulled up stakes in Winslow, Arizona and joined the rush to Grants. In 1956 he build the Uranium Cafe and offered Mexican food.
