Edgar Ingram and Walter Anderson started the White Castle to sell a sandardized, easily cooked burger in a standardized metal building . L.W. White designed castle and set it on a hot parking lot to see if it would survive the Witchita heat. It did.One late on evening I drove along Watson and made photographs of Route 66 landmarks: Ted Drewes Custard Stand, the Coral Court Motel, and the 66 Park In Theatre. When Ted Drewes parents told him they were going to build a custard stand on Route 66, he said, "Cool." In 1946 John Carr hired Adoph Strubig to build a series of Streamline Moderne cabins on Watson Road. He designed the office, like the cabins, in ochre ceramic block, and added a rounded, glass block window to the office. With 18 motels along Watson Road, folks needed entertainment. The 66 Park in offered just that. The Flexon Corp. built the screen tower in 1948, and sold it to Paul Krueger a year later. |
